Whatever the state of play is for your business, it’s always a help to look around you for inspiration and motivation. This feature gives you a window into the lives of exciting entrepreneurs from varied industries and shines a light on how they are changing the world for the better. In this blog, we chat with London-based Emma Jones, Founder of Enterprise Nation.

Since launching in 2005, Enterprise Nation has helped thousands of people start and grow their own successful business. They are the UK’s most active small business community and offer a voice to government for members too. Put simply, they’re building a nation of entrepreneurs!

Enterprise Nation

1/ My alarm goes off…

5.30 or 6am, depending on what’s in the diary.

2/ I’m responsible for…

Running small business network, Enterprise Nation.

3/ My typical day…

There really isn’t one! It could be meeting with partner brands who support the activity we run, hosting an event, working on government plans in my one day a week SME Crown Rep role, or overseeing the tech build-out we have underway. The one constant is working with the Enterprise Nation team to ensure they’re motivated and happy to support our growing small business community!

4/ I check…

Many metrics! I run a daily check of member numbers, site visitors, and event attendees. With excellent support from our brilliant book-keeper, I’m on top of cashflow and revenue projections – you can’t afford not to be!

5/ I track the following KPIs…

Membership growth is a key one for us. At this time when so many small businesses are in need of support, we are working hard to ensure as many as possible can access it – at an affordable cost. We are 6 months into a targeted 3 year business plan and progress towards those targets get monitored too.

6/ I communicate…

Figures are shared with the team in a weekly call and at monthly meetings, as well as on Yammer which is the internal company noticeboard. Each member of the Enterprise Nation team has clearly defined goals and what I’ve tried to create is an environment where the team feel they have the power and autonomy to deliver those goals as if it were their own business – but with the added benefit of being able to dip in to get help from a bigger team.

7/ The best and worst part of my job…

Enterprise Nation

The best part is hearing from members who have won deals, secured growth etc on the back of the support we offer and the worst part is .. losing members!

8/ My most memorable work moment…

I’m still working towards it.

9/ After work…

I have a glass of wine and will either head to an event/client dinner or head home along the River Thames, which is the ultimate end to what are always packed-out days.

10/ Top tip for entrepreneurs…

Keep the faith.

11/ Plan B is…

It sounds like an opt-out but I honestly wouldn’t want to be doing anything else. We’ve got a big job to do in getting quality support to small businesses. The day I lose my motivation for that, I’ll be off. Until then, Enterprise Nation it is!
