Whether you’re a business owner that’s currently in a rut or buzzing off your latest success, it’s always useful to look at the world around you to get inspiration for the next chapter. This feature is designed to give you a window into the lives of exciting entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs from varied industries and shine a light on how they are changing the world for the better. In this blog, we chat with Brisbane-based Jeremy Hartley, Founder of the brand, Hartley Watches.

Time is often referred to as the fourth dimension and it is something that has captivated humanity and divided great men such as Einstein and Newton over centuries. It’s a little of this same feeling of captivation that motivated founder Jeremy Hartley to create his burgeoning brand Hartley Watches.

Blending a classical and contemporary aesthetic has allowed Jeremy to create some quite beautiful timepieces. Whilst he accepts that the functional necessity has reduced, the benefits to one’s sartorial choices remains undiminished. Whatever the occasion, whatever the outfit, a beautiful watch, which Hartley’s undeniably are, finishes it off perfectly.

1/ My alarm goes off…

I am a firm believer of a solid morning ritual to get the most out of any given day. I follow a 3 hour morning routine that prepares me for the day ahead every morning from Monday-Saturday, leaving Sunday as completely work free. I wake at 6:50am and spend one hour eating a small bowl of fruit, a slice of toast and a coffee whilst reading the daily news, then reading emails that came in while I was asleep, then I perform various breathing exercises for 5-10 minutes. Afterwards, I envision what I want to achieve for the day and then I also write to one friend or family member to see how they are. I head to the gym at 8am and spend one hour doing a combination of lifting weights and cardio. To maximise my time at the gym I usually listen to YouTube videos and learn about something of interest or to gain motivation if I’m lacking. At 9am I head home, eat a large breakfast, take a shower and get dressed. I’m now ready to begin work at 10am on the dot.

2/ My typical day…

I always start my working day at 10am and begin by processing the orders from the night before for my two companies. By the time they are packaged and taken to the post office it is then around midday. I will now spend around one or two hours responding to custom enquiries via email before spending a further few hours on social media planning content to be posted and engaging with current and potential collaborators. I then spend a few hours communicating with current stockist and exploring new opportunities with other stores. It is a timely process but making a great business connection is priceless. I’ll also spend some time if permitted working on a new idea and planting seeds for other potential companies in the future. I’ll typically work until 6-7pm, basically until I have dinner at which stage I won’t do any work after that and will spend time winding down. However, in my earlier years as an entrepreneur before my companies picked up traction, I was often working until 2am and would be up at 6am ready to go again. Fortunately, I now appreciate that lifestyle isn’t sustainable and a good work/rest balance is super important!

3/ I’m responsible for…

Everything related to the functioning and operations of my two companies Hartley Watches and Teatox Australia. From client relations, social media to logistics, I do it all to keep costs as low as possible.

4/ I check…

I have my accountant regularly send me P&L and cash flow reports. I think it’s very important to have a good relationship with an accountant who you can trust. I am working with reports online so that I can better keep up to date with the financials of my businesses. The visualisation of the data with graphs makes it much easier to draw valuable insights!

However, my reporting doesn’t focus purely on the financials. I look at other non-financial metrics that impact the long-term success of the business. For example, what is the effect of increased website traffic to online sales over time? How are high customer satisfaction figures affecting my ability to upsell additional products?

5/ I track the following KPIs (Key Performance Indicators)…

I actively monitor the fundamental KPIs that almost all eCommerce companies would track. Sales, ROI on marketing expenses, new clients etc. I have to say the FUTRLI KPI library is a great resource!

6/ My most memorable work moment…

I don’t have a memorable work moment in particular, but it was cool travelling throughout Europe and Central America for 9 months whilst continuing working with the aid of an employee here in Australia managing the logistics. Just a laptop and an internet connection were sufficient to get the job done and it was an amazing experience that changed my perspective on a lot of things.

7/ The best and worst part of my job…

I work from home, so the worst part is sometimes the temptation of relaxing and reading a book comes far too easily. However the best part is also the fact that I work from home and don’t have anyone trying to manage me and give me instructions.

8/ After work…

It’s either bowling, watching a movie or board games with my girlfriend and mates.

9/ Top tip for entrepreneurs…

Keep your job and side hustle just a little longer than you want to. If you make the jump too early you’ll have growing pains (I know from experience). Also never get comfortable, as it will catch up with you, remember why you became an entrepreneur and let that fire inside ignite you to keep you pushing the boundaries and doing bigger and better things than anyone ever thought you could do!

10/ Plan B is…

Becoming an astronaut was my dream as a kid. The thought of exploring different solar systems and visiting their planets, or even just a trip to the Moon or Mars, always fascinated me. It might be a long shot but even now as an adult it is my dream career, though I’d probably settle for a flight with SpaceX or Virgin Galactic!
